Case study: How Les became more active at 60 than he has been in around 30 years

Les is 60, from Edinburgh, Scotland. For years, his weight fluctuated up and down. At the start of 2025, he was diagnosed with arthritis in his knee. That diagnosis pushed him to try a weight loss plan. It worked for a while. Then it stalled.

Before WalkFit, Les was in a bad place. He had low mood. He had no confidence. He had no motivation to get up and move. He'd come home from work and sit down. The most exercise Les got was batch cooking in his kitchen. In June 2025, he started weight control injections, which helped for a while. But progress had started to slow, and something was still missing. Like many weight-loss treatments, weight-loss injections tend to work best when combined with healthy lifestyle changes and regular exercise. Staying active can support weight loss while also helping preserve muscle mass.

That’s when Les discovered WalkFit. He joined the app weighing 156kg and began building walking into his everyday routine. For Les, WalkFit quickly became something like a personal trainer in his head — encouraging him to walk a little faster, slow down when needed, and even remind him to stand a little straighter.

“Believe it or not, it actually works.”

“It does what it says.”

Since starting WalkFit, Les has made walking part of his daily routine, missing only two days—one because he was ill and another because he was simply exhausted from work. As a shift worker, his schedule can change from day to day, so his walks have to fit around his life. Sometimes he walks once a day, sometimes twice. He might go for a walk straight after a night shift or squeeze one in on his way home.

That flexibility is what makes WalkFit work for Les. It’s made for everybody, and the sessions are short enough to fit into even the busiest day. He simply puts in his earphones, turns his music down so he can hear the instructions, and gets moving. Whether WalkFit tells him to pick up the pace, slow down, or straighten his posture, he follows along and keeps going — on his schedule, in his own way.

It hasn't always been easy. One morning, ten minutes into his walk, it started raining heavily, icy rain that soaked him through and froze his fingers. "Three months ago I would have turned around and went back home," he says. "But no, I pushed on. I walked through all the wind and the rain." He recorded part of that walk to show others his route. "If I can do this in the rain, the wind, then anyone can," he says.

Les also lives with ocular myasthenia gravis, a condition that causes muscle weakness, which means he has to watch his heat and exertion levels carefully. He won't exercise at work, he says he feels too embarrassed, no matter how much his colleagues encourage him. For a while, space at home was limited too, while the house was being renovated. None of that stopped his daily walks outside.

Since joining WalkFit at 120kg , Les has lost more than 32kg, reaching 87,5kg — with WalkFit accounting for a noticeable part of his journey. His original goal was to reach 89kg. He’s already gone beyond it. When asked how much of his progress he credits to WalkFit, Les is honest: “I’d have to say probably about 35%. But without it, I’d still be off target.”

And the changes go far beyond the number on the scale. When Les started, 30 minutes of walking left his knees, legs, and back aching. Now he regularly walks for two hours, sometimes carrying extra weight and water in a bag. His arthritis has improved enormously. The only real pain now comes from steep hills, where he has to step down sideways rather than forwards to protect his knees. On one of those hill walks, he stopped to film the view and realized he wasn't puffing or panting.

"I felt absolutely fantastic."

"I'm 60 years old and I'm more active now than I've been in around 30 years."

His energy has changed completely. "Even on days I've thought I really can't be bothered, when I've got up and gone on my walk, I've found I'm happily walking away," he says. "That's a complete change in life."

People around Les started noticing the difference too. His family and friends saw that he had more energy, seemed happier, and was in a noticeably better mood. One of the biggest moments came when his little brother messaged him, unsure if he had just spotted Les walking down the street. “It looked like you,” his brother said, “but you were half the size.”

Moments like that keep Les motivated, but for him, the biggest change is how he feels day to day. He has more energy, feels stronger and more positive, and has found a new sense of motivation and determination to keep going.

Les is also an active member of the WalkFit Facebook community, where users share their progress, experiences, and encouragement. He regularly hears from people who say his story has motivated them to keep going, which means a lot to him. He has even recommended WalkFit and the community to another person living with myasthenia gravis, hoping it could help them on their own journey.

Lately, Les has challenged himself to do hills around Edinburgh, and his next goal is even bigger: climbing Ben Nevis next year with his son. "Without WalkFit there's no way I would have ever been thinking of trying it," Les says. "It's been a dream of mine for a long time to try these mountains.

These days, Les has added swimming to his routine too. This year, he and his family went on a Greek cruise, and he bought new swimwear for the trip. "Never in my life have I braved wearing such tight clothing," he says.

Looking back at where he started, Les sums it up simply:

"I started WalkFit at 156kg with a goal of reaching 89kg. I've now gone beyond that goal and reached 87.5kg, almost 70kg lost.

"WalkFit has helped me stay consistent and keep moving towards my goals. I'm incredibly proud of how far I've come."
