Weight loss products and supplements represent a colossal industry, with a projected market size value of 295.3 billion dollars by 2027. One recent weight loss supplement trend, among others, is to use Ballerina tea to lose weight. But how effective is it?

Due to the increasing obesity epidemic worldwide, more and more people are resorting to quick and effortless fixes like these to help them shed extra pounds. In particular, detox teas have gained a fair share of popularity thanks to their easy integration into the diet.

Below we will examine the Ballerina tea ingredients and whether they work, the benefits, side effects, and recommended consumption methods. Read on to find out everything there is to know about this product to determine if it is the right solution for you.

What is Ballerina tea?

Ballerina tea, also referred to as 3 Ballerina tea, is a caffeine-free herbal tea drink made from Cassia Angustifolia, more commonly known as Senna.

This blend is widely used to support weight loss and weight maintenance. It is said to do this via the laxative properties of Senna which help to empty the bowel.

The so-called laxative properties of Senna are what give this drink its name, as it claims to help you lose weight and look like a Ballerina.

Cassia Angustifolia is generally safe to consume as directed, and it is FDA-approved. [1] However, overconsumption may lead to unpleasant side effects.

Is it true you can use Ballerina tea to lose weight?

As previously discussed, the main ingredient in 3 Ballerina herbal tea, Senna, is a laxative.

Senna can stimulate peristaltic movements of the intestine, helping to move food and fluids more quickly through the digestive tract and out of the body.

This loss of fluids in the form of diarrhea results in weight loss, which is what people taking this tea are aiming for.

However, the weight loss effects are short-lived and only occur while actively consuming  Ballerina tea. This means weight loss will stop once consumption of the tea ceases.

This is because the decrease in weight is a result of dehydration due to loss of liquids, rather than true loss of body fat. As soon as the individual consumes water or other beverages, the body rehydrates and returns to its original weight.

In a nutshell, drinking this tea may lead to short-term weight loss through the loss of body fluids, but it doesn’t actually reduce body fat or contribute to long-term weight loss.

Proven Ballerina tea benefits

Despite it not being the best choice for effective fat loss, Ballerina tea can have some other positive effects on our health. Senna is a plant and as such, comes with a few benefits. Below we outline the main Ballerina tea benefits other than weight loss.

Antioxidant capacity

Ballerina tea contains flavonoids, a potent type of antioxidant. These have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and protect cells from oxidative stress. [2] This, in turn, may decrease the risk of disease.

Laxative effect

As mentioned, Senna, the main ingredient of Ballerina tea, is a laxative and therefore helps your body fight constipation. Senna has an osmotic effect in the gut, drawing water towards the intestine, softening the stool, and facilitating excretion. This may support faster digestion by promoting intestinal contractions. [3]

Caffeine-free herbal tea

Ballerina tea is a caffeine-free beverage. It only contains Senna, which is not a stimulant, and so it can be consumed at any time of the day without any repercussion on your circadian rhythms.

Side effects

Consumption of weight-loss laxative teas for prolonged periods can result in side effects.  Below we outline the main side effects of prolonged Ballerina tea or Senna consumption.

Dehydration

Laxatives lead to water loss through diarrhea and result in dehydration. This is especially true for people who do not increase their water consumption during their laxative cycle.

While dehydration for a short period of time is not typically a cause for concern, prolonged dehydration from chronic laxative use can lead to unpleasant side effects including:

  • Light-headedness and dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Blurry vision
  • Confusion
  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Dark urine with an intense smell
  • Fainting
  • Electrolyte imbalance (and related health problems)

In more severe cases, dehydration can even lead to heart and kidney problems and death in very rare cases. [4], [5]

Diarrhea and constipation

Overconsumption of Ballerina tea can lead to chronic diarrhea. However, it can also cause constipation due to weakened bowel muscles. Using laxatives for longer than one week could cause a loss of tone in the bowel muscle, and if your muscles weaken, you may have trouble passing stools on your own.

Intestinal Damage

Constant diarrhea and water accumulation in the gut from prolonged laxative consumption can cause severe issues to your digestive tract. It may also increase your chances of developing colon cancer. [6]

Interaction with medications

Laxatives may also interfere with or reduce the absorption of prescription medications. Therefore it is advisable to check with your doctor if it is safe for you to use Ballerina tea, especially if you are taking prescription drugs.

Abdominal cramps

The continuous stimulation of peristaltic movements and the accumulation of water in the intestine can cause abdominal cramps.

Toxicity

Senna is a hepatotoxin, which means it is a toxin that affects the liver. In addition to this, due to low regulatory standards, some commercially available Senna products may contain plants from the same genus, Senna Occidentalis, which is highly toxic. While rare, consumption of these products could lead to liver failure. [7], [8]

Unsafe prolonged consumption

Overconsumption of Senna can lead to some adverse effects if continued for over one consecutive week. These include an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer, diarrhea, fatigue, liver failure, abdominal pain, cutaneous rash, electrolyte imbalances, and indigestion. [6]

Why is Ballerina tea not working?

When researching its weight loss effects, you will soon realize Ballerina tea doesn’t work for most people, or at least not in the long run.

This is because Ballerina tea is unable to break down fat, and any weight loss is only temporary as a result of your body losing fluids.

To reduce belly fat successfully, opt for a balanced diet that provides you with all the key nutrients you need along with a regular exercise program. To make your journey easier, you could even use an app for weight loss that helps you schedule your workouts, log your food diary, and keep an eye on your progress.

What’s the average weight loss with three Ballerina tea?

While there is no data on the average weight loss with three Ballerina tea, people consuming laxatives can lose between 400g to 1kg of water weight per day, along with around 100g of stool weight.

However, it is important to reiterate that no actual fat loss occurs following the consumption of Ballerina tea.

How to prepare 3 Ballerina herbal tea?

If you want to enjoy a cup of this herbal tea for its benefits, below are the instructions on how to drink Ballerina tea safely and prepare it correctly.

Instructions:

  1. Boil some water in a kettle or on the hob.
  2. Once boiled, pour 10 oz (around 300ml) of water into a cup and brew one 3 Ballerina tea bag for five minutes.
  3. Add some honey if you would like some sweetness.

It is suggested you start by drinking just one cup of Ballerina tea to assess its effects on your body. Then, you can move up to a maximum of three cups daily.

If you want to drink it to simply enjoy its taste, you can do that. You can have it any time of the day, including the evening as it does not contain stimulants like caffeine.

If you want to drink it to improve your bowel movements, however, you should consume it after you’ve eaten as it usually takes around 8 hours to work. When using it for its laxative properties, make sure to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and reduce the risk of constipation.

Due to the adverse symptoms from the overconsumption of Ballerina tea ingredients, you should not regularly drink this herbal tea for a period longer than 1-2 weeks.
